Diesel Learning
Diesel Learning is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2024 and located in Ashburn, Virginia. Diesel Learning uses robotics to provide and promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and resources for K-12 students.
Our current projects include mentoring a 4th/5th grade Vex IQ team, hosting regional Vex IQ competitions, and hosting the Virginia VIQRC State Championship.
About Us:
In 2018 my parents started a Vex IQ Robotics team for me (Giovanni) and some of my 4th grade friends. Thus, Savage Bots (25757A) was born. I became the team captain and principal coder. Our team competed for 5 seasons and was one of the top teams in Virginia every year. We qualified for the Vex World Championship all 5 seasons and placed 4th in the World in 2021.
Post Covid, there was a lack of regional tournaments in Virginia so we decided to start hosting not one, but two tournaments so that teams would have more opportunities to compete with their robots. We held one tournament at the Nysmith School and the other at the Dulles Town Center Mall in the former space of Sears! Both tournaments were a huge success, and we have continued hosting multiple tournaments every year since. In addition, we volunteered to host the Elementary and Middle School IQ State Championships in March 2025.
After aging out of IQ and realizing that I missed the thrill of the robotics competitions, I decided to create Diesel Learning so that I could help more with hosting tournaments and start mentoring VEX IQ teams. My first team ('24/25) was the Tech Titans - 91010A - a group of fourth grade boys. They qualified for States and WON the Teamwork Challenge, 3rd Place Skills, and the Innovate Award, and competed at the World Championships.
My second ('25/26) team is the Delta Bots - 25757B - and consists of two 5th graders from last year's team plus 2 new 4th graders. In four competitions so far this year they have won the Excellence, Teamwork, Skills, Innovate and Judges Awards and qualified for the Virginia State Championships.
Vex IQ Robotics
Diesel Learning specializes in Vex Robotics (IQ specifically) and holds biannual seminars to introduce parents to the Vex Robotics Challenge and explain how to start a Vex IQ team. As of 2025, we have helped in the creation of over 18 private teams in the Northern Virginia area since 2022.

Regional Competitions & State Championship
Diesel Learning hosts several competitions each year, including the Nysmith School Robotics Competition, A Day at the Mall, and beginning in 2025, the Virginia Vex IQ State Championships.
In addition to hosting, Diesel Learning provides Judges, Referees, and Scorekeepers to other area competitions.
